Conquest Ethic
The Norsemen went a viking
to raid and kill for plunder,
dragon ships beneath them
square sail they all lived under.
On benches athwart their long ships
they rowed against the wind,
bright round shields hung outboard
used in their battles to win.
Brave stout men and berserkers
drove enemies away like cattle,
the signature talent of a Norseman crew
was a savage prowess in battle.
Open invasion and bold attack
spread terror at their name,
villages and towns fled to hide
wherever the Norsemen came.
Ax and sword in willing hand
conquered all who would resist,
only surrender and tribute
would persuade them to desist.
Gold crucifixes or sheep in the field
all fair game for the taking,
treaties and pacts signed in blood
was their future in the making.
Striking fear from Newfoundland
away to the far Black Sea,
the Scandinavian raiders
went unafraid and free.
