Breakspear's Son

Scion of the Norseman's legend was apprenticed to the fear,
of following his father's footsteps when he wanted to get clear.

Addicted to violent triumphs and living through his son
determined to remain alive and show them he's the one.

Gave the lad his name and sword then placed him in the song,
to have another lifetime where he did not belong.

Chieftain for so many years but still not long enough
to learn of grace and wisdom remaining vain and rough.

Fearing irrelevance with death hope lived on through his boy,
without the sense to realize the futility of the ploy.

Carried aboard upon his shield for the final voyage; to drift,
alone at last no longer feared in his flaming dragon ship.

His death revealed the mercy of his unsought legacy,
his son's foremost desire; to be finally and fully free.
