Of Two Minds

Truths revealed in daylight
secrets mine to keep,
bedevil my soul and conscience
as I lie in fitful sleep.

I witness these lingering sorrows
burdens to be my own,
as I wander the Garden of Evil
where the seeds of doubt are sown.

The flesh is weak and willing
for every kind of lust,
and my soul regrets the agony
to be suffered, as it must.

Living a life of purity
from within this body of flesh,
requires a measure of fortitude
at which I can only guess.

For the cloying of the senses
with the pleasure of fragrant wine,
is an inviting situation
in which to spend my time.

Why must the soul chastise me
for partaking of the meal,
of sensory debauchery
so luxurious to feel?

Our bodies are a vessel
to besot and prime,
with indulgences delicious;
life’s pleasures so sublime.
