No soaring tale of mighty deeds
only scalding shame,
is it any wonder then
their stories weren’t the same.
To slink away in hiding from
victorious boasting brutes,
who’s recounting of the battle
often overlooks some truths.
Ill equipped outnumbered and
perhaps taken by surprise,
often was the reason for
brave warriors sad demise.
But in hearing of it later
they ran like witless sheep,
knowledge of their valor
only theirs to keep.
One sided and inaccurate
becomes the version passed along,
told in halls around the fires
written down or in a song.
How true can be the braggarts’
unexamined self esteem
when the witness to deception
has passed away unseen?
