Ageless Power

The sea Gods feared by sailing men
dwell on in the briny deep,
out of sight but still in mind
with vengeful jealous mystique.

Recalled from far antiquity
be they Roman or Greek or Celt,
the fear imparted for disrespect
can still be eerily felt.

Long before Siddhartha sat
and became Lord Buddha the wise,
or the son of God was crucified
to give man the greatest prize.

Already old when Mohammad wrote
they dwelt beneath the waves,
Neptune and Poseidon ruled
when men still lived in caves.

The modern church and technology
pushed them from our mind,
but those who dare upon the deep
dread they remain below to find.

From oar to sail to diesel ships
no matter the speed we go,
does not belay the fear of death
when seafaring men will go.

The abyssal depths remain dark and cold
as the shadows in their hearts,
where Davy Jones awaits them
when they wander off the charts.
