Empty Pedestals

There are two places in my life
where no one right now stands;
the graceful perches that lovers fill
not the woman's or the man's.

Briefly I was enthroned up there
till she raked me with her spurs,
then jumped down and ran away
now mine's empty, as is hers.

Those vacant aeries of the heart
stand deserted for lack of love,
cold and silent to wait in vain
the view desolate from above.

The approaches choked with bitter weeds
no glances paid in years,
when last I looked upon their heights
I turned away in tears.

Spending now my remaining time
blinded and alone,
daring not to raise my eyes
to love's long empty throne.
