Killing Pollyanna

The Camelot of Kennedy
his peace Corps and the moon,
a bright new future beckoned
anticipated soon.

Then his assassination
followed by Vietnam,
scoundrels elected president
the list goes on and on.

Why must our hopes be shattered
by the greedy and the mean?
Setbacks to aspirations
make me want to scream.

We plan and pray and organize
for the progress of the whole,
only to be thwarted
short of our intended goal.

If hope does spring eternal
perhaps we’ll realize,
it provides the only reason
for us to stay alive.

For Earthly life is troubling
when optimism hits the wall,
yet heaven holds out promise
eternally buoying the hopes of all.
